One of the best things about having a company like Supportal is some of the amazing people we get to meet and work with. As many of you know, we are pretty active on Instagram and we recently had the pleasure of connecting with Sarah Sanders on there. Sarah is the mom of a child who is autistic. She is also the creator of Sensory Toys By Sarah – a company that makes handmade sensory toys. We got together on Zoom to find out more.
What Got you into making sensory toys?
Sarah says she started her business a number of years ago when she needed sensory toys for her child but couldn’t find anything great online for a reasonable price. She wanted toys that were made of child-safe materials that were 100% durable and hardwearing but at the same time suitable for a child with sensory needs. It seemed as if all the toys that were made right were super expensive and any that were the right price were made of inferior materials and weren’t built to last. As anyone with a sensory kid knows, toys and playthings need to feel nice, be tough enough to withstand pulling and chewing and also be easy to clean. Sarah decided to make some toys herself and so it began.
What’s Different About the Toys you Make?
All the toys are made using non-toxic poly pellets made in North Carolina says Sarah. They are completely safe in the washer and dryer and are perfect for making things like sensory snakes and weighted blankets. Sarah also stitches every seam on each of her toys multiple times, so no matter how tough they’re handled, they won’t come apart. This also means they last for years.
Custom Made
Sarah is all too aware of how our kids with special needs are particular with their likes and dislikes so she is very happy to take custom orders and create toys that they will love and will meet their specific sensory needs. It may be you want a certain fabric or a certain colour. Whatever it is, she is always happy to talk and make sure your order is just right. And the best news…she ships all over the USA!
